Funding by the federal and state governments for the next ten years

The FAU will receive a center for national high performance computing (NHR) at universities – this was announced by the Joint Science Conference (GWK) at its meeting on November 13, 2020. On January 1, 2021, the “Zentrum für nationales Hochleistungsrechnen Erlangen” (NHR@FAU) will be established and form a national association with seven other centers. The federal and state governments are funding the entire project for an initial ten years with a total of up to 625 million euros.

Science Minister Bernd Sibler emphasized: “Today’s decision by the GWK proves that the Free State is an outstanding technology location. With the further expansion of the renowned Regional Computer Center Erlangen to an NHR Center, we are creating a hotspot of scientific computing in Northern Bavaria in the future. In doing so, we will further improve the framework conditions for research based on high-performance computing and thus strengthen the entire Free State as a top location for high-performance computing”.
