Promote digital teaching and learning

Digital education is more important than ever. With the newly opened DigiLLab, FAU now has another important building block for the future-oriented training of future teachers. But not only that: Together with the content offerings of media education and computer science didactics, FAU offers a unique focus for digital education in Bavaria.

The DigiLLab project is supported by the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and Art. Science Minister Bernd Sibler emphasized at the opening ceremony: “Teachers play a decisive role in getting young people fit for a reflective, critical and goal-oriented approach to digital media. The DigiLLab offers the ideal framework for making prospective teachers competent for this important task during their training. Here, new concepts of digital teaching are developed, tested and researched – a true laboratory of the future! FAU thus shows in an exemplary manner how teacher training can be designed to be up-to-date.

At the Regensburger Straße campus in Nuremberg, two rooms have now been technically converted so that various teaching-learning scenarios can be implemented and cooperative work with digital media can be tried out. In addition, mobile devices such as tablets and notebooks are available for use in courses and, in the future, for school experiments.

But that is by no means all: In order to give students the skills they need to teach with digital media in schools and to impart media competence to students, teachers with the appropriate background are of course also indispensable. Accordingly, the DigiLLab is scientifically embedded in the interdisciplinary profile focus “Digital Education” for teacher training at FAU: In addition to the already existing Chair of Pedagogy with the focus on media pedagogy of Prof. Dr. Rudolf Kammerl and the relevant subject didactics, an additional Chair of School Pedagogy with the focus on digitization will take up its work in the near future.
