Use and benefit of media in kindergartens and schools

Institute of Book Studies at FAU completes the final phase of a three-year research project in the district of Forchheim

Children or rather young people and media – this has always been a controversial topic. Especially when it comes to digital media, adults usually think: less is more. But should children really keep their hands off the TV, PC or smartphone? And is it true that young people no longer have any use for books at all, preferring instead to follow Internet influencers? From 2017 to 2019, researchers from FAU’s Institute of Book Studies, in collaboration with the Academy for All-Day School Pedagogy and the education office of the district of Forchheim, got to the bottom of these and other questions as part of the project “Media Education and Literacy in Kindergartens and Schools”.

One central finding is that the key to using analog and digital media is reading competence. The researchers used the successful “FOrlesen” reading mentor project, which has been running in the district of Forchheim since 2016, to find out how this can be optimally promoted.
